Playing Time Policy

A significant part of the coaches’ role is the assignment of playing time.  The following points reflect the parameters within which coaches at Georgetown Impact Volleyball Club (GIVC) make decisions about how playing time is awarded:

• Each team at Georgetown Impact Volleyball Club is committed to perform at the highest level possible.

• There is no equal-play policy in the Club, however, teams competing in 16u (Trillium Division) and younger levels in OVA tournaments are subject to fair-play rules imposed by the OVA.

• Playing time is at the sole discretion of the coaching staff.  Their goal is to achieve success of the team, and player selection will be made with that aim in mind.  A number of factors will continually change over the course of a set, game and tournament.  Factors determining how much playing time an athlete earns include:

  • State of technical skills

  • Mental state and composure

  • Interaction with others on the court

  • Ability to execute the team’s system

  • Acknowledgement of work in practice

  • Opportunity to gain experience from game play

  • Situational factors (i.e. strength on serve)

  • Attendance at practices

  • Player in good standing at the club​

Making good judgement about these factors is the most difficult job of the coaching staff.  Athletes and parents can help in the following ways:

• Athletes – engage in an on-going dialogue with your coaching staff to learn how to maximize your role on the court and with the team

• Parents – support your children in their effort to self-advocate and take responsibility for their development as athletes.  Please reference the Conflict Resolution Policy for appropriate actions.
